Dislike work. • Elton Mayo • Chester Barnard • Douglas McGregor – Theory X: Employees are lazy. Avoid responsibility and must be punished to achieve goals. Enjoy work.) Type 2 Theorists Recognized the social nature of organizations. Seek responsibility. These theorist viewed organization as made up of both tasks and people. The concept of Theory X and Theory Y was developed by social psychologist Douglas McGregor. It describes two contrasting sets of assumptions that managers make about their people: Theory X – people dislike work, have little ambition, and are unwilling to take responsibility. Tion, Essays of Douglas McGregor, edited by W. Bennis and E. Schein (Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 1966): 3–20. McGregor’s six assumptions of Theory Y and his ideas of integrating individual and organization goals are congruent with the main planks in my philosophy of life now and at that time. According to McGregor, there are the following two types ofmanagers:
• Theory X managers - These managers believe that most ofthe people are self-centered, are only motivated by theirphysiological and safety needs, and are indifferent to the needs ofthe organization they work for. They (usually the team) lackambition and have very little creativity and problem-solvingcapacity. As a result, they dislike their work and will try toavoid it. They will also avoid taking responsibility andinitiative. There is one word to describe Theory X managers:distrust. They distrust their employees. These managers, therefore, tend to be authoritarian.
• Theory Y managers - As opposed to Theory X managers,Theory Y managers trust their employees. They believe that most ofthe people are high performers in a proper work environment. Thisis because most of the people are creative and committed to meetingthe needs of the organization they work for. Theory Y managers alsobelieve that most people like to take responsibility and initiativeand are self-disciplined. Finally, they also believe that mostpeople are motivated by all levels of needs in the Maslow'shierarchy of needs. These managers tend to provide more freedom andopportunity for career growth.
